What is Sterling Silver? All About 925 and 999 Silver and Jewelry Care

All About Sterling and Fine Silver:

Our silver jewelry is made of either 0.925 sterling silver or 0.999 fine silver. These numbers represent the millesimal fineness, a standardized system for denoting the purity of a precious metal. 0.925 or 925 sterling silver is made up of 92.5% pure silver by weight and combined with other alloys to make is sturdier and bend over time. This makes it a perfect choice for wire wrapping as it is soft enough to bend but also hard enough to keep it's shape easily. All of our 0.999 or 999 pieces are made from silver precious metal clay and kiln fired to remove binders, leaving 99.9% pure silver. All listings are marked with millesimal fineness for reference. When thrifting or buying new jewelry, these pieces are typically stamped with the fineness, making them easy to identify.

How to Care for Sterling and Fine Silver Jewelry:

Sterling silver is a great choice for jewelry because it is hypoallergenic and will not rust. However, sterling silver is a metal alloy that naturally reacts with other chemicals in the environment causing it to tarnish over time. There is no way to avoid this altogether but you can slow this process by limiting exposure to moisture and keeping your pieces in an airtight container when not in use. This means taking your jewelry off to shower, swim, or apply skincare. If you notice your pieces tarnishing, polishing with a cloth as needed with quickly restore your pieces.

Will Sterling or Fine Silver Turn My Finger Green?

This all depends on the purity of the silver and the metal used to create the alloy. Some have more sensitive skin or naturally produce more sweat that is able to react with the metals. However, with proper care and minimizing exposure of your jewelry to moisture, the chances of your skin turning green are very, very low.
